How to Care for Paris Texas Shoes: Patent, Suede, Croc-Embossed, Mirrored and the Pink Sole
A Paris Texas shoe is a leather sole, a leather insole and an upper in one of about a dozen materials, and the care is different for each. Patent wants a damp cloth and no heat. Suede wants a brush and a spray. Mirrored leather wants nothing near it that could scratch. The pink lacquered sole will mark on the first wear whatever you do. Calf, nappa and brushed leather
Most of the boots, the El Dorado, the Bettina and the Jane and Vera among them, are plain calf and nappa. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wear, let them rest a day between outings so the leather dries from the inside, and feed them with a neutral cream every few weeks in the season you wear them. Brushed and vintage-finish leathers are meant to mark, so leave the patina alone. Use a shoe tree on a knee boot to keep the shaft from creasing at the ankle.
Patent leather
Patent is the biggest group in the range, most of the Lidia mules and slingbacks. Wipe with a soft cloth barely damp with water and buff dry; never use a leather cream, which clouds the finish, and never leave patent in direct sun, and never in a hot car, which dulls it. Store the pairs in separate dust bags, because patent transfers colour to patent when two pairs sit against each other for a month. A scuff on patent is permanent, so the pink sole and a cobbler’s protector are the only two things worth worrying about.
Suede
Suede is the second-biggest group, the Dallas and Anja boots and many of the Lidia ankle boots. Protect a new pair with a suede spray before the first wear and again each season. Brush with a suede brush in one direction to lift the nap after wear, and use a suede eraser on a dry mark. Keep it out of rain: a wet suede boot should dry naturally, stuffed with paper, away from a radiator. Tundra, Cioccolato and Ebano suedes hide marks better than the pale Angora and Stone.
Croc-embossed, python-print and lizard-print calf
These are calf leathers with a pattern stamped into the surface, printed in the python and lizard versions, so they take the same care as plain calf: a dry cloth, an occasional neutral cream worked into the grain with a soft brush, and rest between wears. The Stiletto boots in croc-embossed calf are among the hardest-wearing pairs in the range because the embossing hides small scuffs. Do not use exotic-skin conditioners, which are formulated for scales that lift.
Mirrored leather, satin, velvet and feathers
The mirrored Lidia is a foil finish on calf. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only, keep it in its dust bag, and never stack another shoe on it, because the surface scratches. Satin and velvet spot-clean with a barely damp cloth and air dry; velvet brushes back with a soft clothes brush. The feathered thong mules want the feathers combed gently with a wide-tooth comb and stored so nothing crushes them. The shearling and fur boots shake out and comb the same way, and should never get wet.
The sole
The leather sole with the Texas Rose lacquer is the house signature and the first thing to wear. The lacquer scuffs on the first outing, which is normal and does not affect the shoe. A cobbler can fit a thin rubber half-sole to the forepart in a day, which protects the leather from wet pavements and stops the slide on polished floors, and the pink stays visible around the edge. Have the heel tip replaced when it wears to the plastic; on the Lidia stiletto that is a small job done in minutes.
Storage
Store in the dust bag, one pair per bag, in a cool dry cupboard. Shoe trees in the boots, tissue in the toes of the mules, and never in the box in a damp room. Patent and mirrored leather should not touch another shoe. Fur and shearling should be kept in a breathable bag through summer, not a plastic one.
