Ateliers Auguste Leathers: Box, Smooth, Pebble, Suede

Ateliers Auguste works in five Italian calf leathers: box calf, the glossy structured one most of the range is cut from; smooth calf, new in 2026 on the Sévigné, the Mini Sévigné and the Passy East West; grained calf, also called pebble, the scratch-resistant one on the totes; suede; and a lizard-embossed calf for the seasonal shades. All are tanned in northern Italy at an LWG-certified partner, comply with REACH, and are treated to resist rain. Box calf leather

Box calf is a fine-grained calfskin, chrome tanned, sometimes mixed tanned, and polished to a near-mirror finish. The brand’s own leather guide calls it among the most prestigious leathers for structured bags, dense and firm, with a patina that deepens and darkens and blends micro-scratches over time, and warns that it is more sensitive to scratches in its first months and that water can mark it if not wiped. It is the leather of the Mini Monceau, the Monceau, the Marceau, the Alma, the Capucine, the Mini Marly and the Marly in Black, Chocolate, Tan, Taupe and Off White.

Smooth calf leather

Smooth leather has an even surface with no prominent grain and a softer, more matte hand than box. It is the newest leather in the range, launched in the 2026 collection on the Sévigné in Taupe, the Mini Sévigné and the Passy East West in Taupe and Chocolate. It shows fingerprints less than box, patinas more slowly, and suits the softer tote shapes.

Grained calf (pebble)

Grained leather carries an embossed pebble texture that hides scratches, which is why the brand puts it on the bags that work hardest: the Sévigné tote in Black, the Amelot and Mini Amelot, and the Passy East West Silver Edition. The brand’s guide calls it the most practical for daily use, robust and low maintenance, with a more subdued patina.

Suede

The suede is brushed Italian calf in Tan and Chocolate, on the Roquette, the Mini Monceau, the Monceau Baguette, the Amelot family and the Sévigné tote. It is the softest hand in the range and the one that needs care: keep it dry, brush it with a suede brush, use a protector spray, and store it away from light.

Lizard-embossed calf

The Limoncello pieces are calf leather pressed with a lizard pattern, so they carry the scale texture without reptile skin. At Luxury Handbags that leather survives on the Marceau in Limoncello; the brand rotates it in and out with the seasonal shades.

Care, in the brand’s words

Protect the bag from moisture, grease, cosmetics, perfume and heat; avoid rubbing dark clothes on light bags; store it in its cotton pouch stuffed with tissue; nourish the leather once a year, twice at most, with a colourless leather milk on a soft cloth; do not apply water repellent at purchase because the leathers are already treated, and reapply at most once a year. For suede, brush and protector; for box calf, wipe water off at once.

“Leather is a noble material, but it can easily become predictable,” Xavier Valembert told Style Essentials in March 2026. “For us, leather should not only look beautiful, it should age with dignity.”
