Mackage Down Coats and Puffers: Every Warmth Rating Explained

Every Mackage down coat carries a warmth rating, printed on the product page as the lowest temperature it is designed for. The scale runs from plus 5C for the lightest jackets to minus 35C for the Edward parka, which makes Mackage one of the easiest luxury outerwear brands to buy by climate. This guide explains the ratings, the down inside and which styles sit where. Shop the full range in the Mackage collection.

Quick answer

  • Warmest: the men’s Edward parka at minus 35C, then the women’s Trish at minus 30C.
  • City winters: the Kay and Shiloh at minus 25C and the Adali at minus 20C cover most cold cities.
  • Layering pieces: light down jackets and vests sit between plus 5C and minus 10C.
  • Down: traceable down throughout, RCS certified recycled down on many styles and 800 fill power on the warmest coats.

How the Mackage warmth ratings work

Mackage gives each style a single temperature: the coldest conditions it is built for, worn with the layers the fit allows. Across the current range the ratings sit at plus 5C, 0C, minus 5C, minus 10C, minus 15C, minus 20C, minus 25C, minus 30C and minus 35C. Minus 5C is the most common rating, and only a handful of coats go below minus 25C. The rating assumes normal activity in dry cold; wind, damp and standing still for long periods all make a coat feel colder, so choose one step warmer than the forecast if you run cold.

The ratings, style by style

Style Type Rating
Edward (men) 2-in-1 parka with removable hooded bib Minus 35C
Trish (women) Powder Touch down coat, windproof shell Minus 30C
Kay (women) Three-quarter fitted down coat Minus 25C
Shiloh (women) 2-in-1 down coat with removable bib Minus 25C
Dixon (men) Down bomber with removable hooded bib Minus 25C
Moritz (men) Twill parka Minus 25C
Adali (women) Longer fitted down coat Minus 20C

What is inside a Mackage coat

Most Mackage coats are filled with 90% duck down and 10% feathers, and the warmest styles state 800 fill power, a measure of how much space the down fills and so how much warmth it gives for its weight. A few styles use goose down instead. Mackage describes its down as traceable, and many of the current pieces, including the Kay and the Hoshi vest, are made with RCS certified recycled down. The shells are water resistant rather than waterproof, so a down coat handles snow and showers but is not a raincoat.

Which Mackage puffer should you buy?

For the coldest winters

The Trish pairs a windproof Powder Touch shell with the Signature Collar, and for men the Edward adds a removable lustrous down bib under the parka. Both are built for long, hard winters.

For a cold city

The Kay is the Mackage most people picture: three-quarter length, fitted, with the asymmetric zip and the Signature Collar. The Shiloh gives you the same warmth with a removable bib, so it works on milder days too. Compare the fitted icons in our guide to the Adali, Kay and Trish.

For layering and travel

Light down pieces such as the Madalyn jacket and the Chaya vest pack small and sit under a wool coat. See our edit of Mackage vests.
