Mackage vs Canada Goose: Which Luxury Winter Coat Should You Buy?

Mackage and Canada Goose are the two Canadian names people compare most when they buy a serious winter coat. Both make down outerwear rated for real cold, but they come at it from opposite ends: Canada Goose from expedition gear, Mackage from tailoring and leather. This is how they differ, and how to choose. Shop the Mackage collection at Luxury Shoes .

Quick answer

  • Choose Mackage for a fitted, tailored coat with leather trims that you can wear to the office and out to dinner.
  • Choose Canada Goose for a roomy, technical parka made in Canada for extreme cold.
  • Warmth: both brands rate their coats. Mackage runs from plus 5C to minus 35C on a temperature scale; Canada Goose uses its own five-level scale.
  • Fur: Canada Goose has been fur-free since the end of 2022. Mackage still offers natural fur trims on some styles alongside fur-free versions.

The two brands

Canada Goose was founded in Toronto in 1957 and grew from workwear and expedition parkas; most of its parkas are still made in Canada. Mackage was founded in Montreal in 1999 by Eran Elfassy, with co-founder Elisa Dahan, and built its name on sculpted, leather-trimmed down coats. It is owned by APP Group, a private Montreal company, and makes its outerwear with partner factories in Asia and Europe.

Design and fit

This is where they differ most. A Canada Goose parka is cut generously, with a boxy body and a big hood made to go over thick layers. Mackage cuts close to the body: its Kay, Adali and Trish have a nipped waist, an asymmetric zip, the high Signature Collar and leather trims at the pockets and cuffs. Mackage’s fitted styles run small, and the brand recommends sizing up. Read the Mackage size guide before you order.

Warmth

Both brands make coats for genuine cold. Mackage prints a temperature on every style, from plus 5C on its lightest jackets to minus 25C on the Kay and Shiloh, minus 30C on the Trish and minus 35C on the men’s Edward parka. The warmest Mackage coats state 800 fill power. Our guide to Mackage warmth ratings lists them all.

Fur

Canada Goose stopped making products with fur at the end of 2022. Mackage still offers natural fur trims, such as silver fox and blue fox collars, on some styles, and fur-free versions of its icons sit beside them. Each product page states the composition of the trim, so you can choose the version you want. Shearling and sheepskin trims also appear on some Mackage styles.

Which should you buy?

If you want one coat for city life that looks tailored with a dress and a pair of boots, Mackage is the stronger choice; the Shiloh with its removable bib covers the widest range of weather. If you spend long hours outdoors in extreme cold and want a looser parka, Canada Goose suits that brief. For men, the Dixon bomber and the Edward parka are Mackage’s answer to the classic expedition parka, cut slimmer.
