Green Evening Gowns: Sage, Forest and Fern, and How to Wear Each
Green evening gowns come in three useful families this winter: sage, a soft grey-green; forest green, a deep, rich green; and fern, a mossy green with yellow in it. Forest is the safest green for black tie, fern looks the most expensive by candlelight, and sage is the modern, quiet choice that works best in tailoring. Alex Perry‘s Fall Winter 2026 collection covers all three, in dry jersey, satin crepe and wool suiting.
Which green suits which skin tone, season and dress code?
Green is easier to wear than its reputation. The trick is matching the depth of the green to the depth of your colouring, and the yellow in the green to the warmth of your skin.
| Shade | Undertone | Flatters | Season | Dress code | Alex Perry piece |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sage | Grey, slightly cool | Fair to medium skin, cool and neutral undertones | Autumn, spring | Cocktail, smart daytime | Wool suiting drape mini, corset top, blazer |
| Forest green | Deep, cool-leaning | Almost everyone; strongest on deep and olive skin | Winter | Black tie, formal | Dry jersey one shoulder scarf gown |
| Fern | Warm, yellow-leaning | Warm and olive undertones, dark hair | Autumn, winter | Formal, cocktail | Satin crepe long-sleeve tiered gown |
| Chartreuse | Bright, yellow | Deep skin tones | Summer, resort | Formal, garden | Crepe jersey one shoulder draped gown |
| Teal | Blue-green | Cool undertones, red hair | Year round | Cocktail | Stretch crepe strapless dress |
If you are unsure, start with forest. It has enough depth to read formal and enough blue to sit well against most complexions, and it is the green least likely to wash anyone out under flash.
Is sage green formal?
Sage is formal when the cut is. On its own it is a soft, grey-green, so a sage gown in a floaty fabric can look like a bridesmaid dress. Alex Perry avoids that by putting sage into 100% virgin wool suiting with a corset under it. The Strapless Drape Mini Dress in sage wool suiting has a straight neckline, a longline corset and a sash of cloth falling from the hip; it is a cocktail dress, not a gown. On Luxury Shoes , FW26 sage does not come floor-length, so for a formal sage look, build it from tailoring.
The sage suit is the better story anyway. The Strapless Longline Corset Top in sage with the Pleated Trouser in sage and the Double Breasted Fitted Blazer in sage is an evening suit for any formal night where tailoring is welcome; swap in the Straight Trouser for a longer, leaner leg. Worn with gold and a pointed heel, sage tailoring looks more current than any sage gown. For the olive end of the spectrum, the Tailored Trouser in olive wool suiting does the same job in a warmer shade. Our evening tailoring guide covers how to wear it.
Forest green: the dry jersey gown
The best green gown in the collection is the One Shoulder Scarf Gown in forest green dry jersey. Dry jersey is a matte 100% viscose that falls in long folds. The bodice wraps asymmetrically to one shoulder, a scarf trails from the neck to the floor, and the skirt flares from the knee.
The short version is the One Shoulder Cape Sleeve Twist Mini Dress: a cape over one shoulder, a high neckline and a twist at the hip. Wear it with sheer black tights and a black pump to a winter cocktail party. Forest also takes a red leather jacket beautifully: try the cherry cropped biker over either piece.
Fern: the satin-crepe gown
Fern is the green to buy if you want people to ask what colour it is. It sits between olive and moss, warm and slightly yellow, and in Alex Perry’s satin crepe it has a soft sheen at the folds. The Long Sleeve Asymmetric Tiered Drape Gown in fern has a crew neck, long sleeves and a tiered drape cascading down one side of the skirt. It is the most covered gown in the collection, which makes it the right choice for a winter church wedding and a cold venue.
The One Shoulder Drape Dress in fern is the cocktail length: a layered asymmetric neckline over one shoulder and ruching across the body. Joey King wore Alex Perry Resort 2027, a leather bodice over an olive skirt, to the InStyle Imagemakers Awards in October 2026, and the green-with-leather idea works just as well here with a black leather biker on top.
More green from Alex Perry
Beyond the new season, Luxury Handbags carries two more greens from the label. The One Shoulder Draped Gown in chartreuse crepe jersey is the bright one, a yellow-green for summer black tie and resort weddings; it is a lot of colour, and it is magnificent on deep skin. The Strapless Dress in teal stretch crepe is a blue-green cocktail dress with a strapless line. You can filter every current piece through green Alex Perry dresses.
What jewellery goes with a green evening gown?
Gold, nearly always. Yellow gold warms forest green and fern and makes both look richer. Silver and platinum suit sage and teal, the two cooler greens, and look sharp against grey-green wool. A few rules:
- Forest green: gold, diamonds, and emeralds if you have them. Tone-on-tone green stones look deliberate against a deep green.
- Fern: antique gold and amber tones. Avoid bright white diamonds in bulk; they look cold against the yellow in fern.
- Sage: pearls, silver, and a fine gold chain. Sage is quiet, so the jewellery can be quiet too.
- Necklines: the one-shoulder and scarf gowns need earrings, not necklaces. The crew-neck fern gown takes a statement earring and a cuff over the sleeve.
What shoes go with a green dress?
Do not match the green. A shoe in the same green flattens the look. Instead:
- Metallic gold sandals with forest and fern for black tie.
- Black satin pumps with any green, the safest option.
- A deep burgundy shoe with forest green for a colour-confident pairing; see our burgundy evening gowns edit for the reverse.
- Nude pointed heels with sage tailoring, to keep the leg long under a pleated trouser.
Green is also one of the strongest choices for a winter wedding guest, covered in our winter wedding guest dresses edit. For other colours, see red evening gowns and purple evening gowns.

Frequently asked questions
What colour green is best for black tie?
Forest green is the best green for black tie. It is deep enough to read formal at night, flatters most skin tones, and holds up under flash photography. Choose it in a floor-length gown with a weighty fabric, such as dry jersey and satin crepe. Fern, a warmer mossy green, is the second choice and suits warm and olive undertones especially well.
Is sage green formal?
Sage green is formal when the cut and fabric are structured. A sage gown in a light, floaty fabric can look casual, but sage in wool suiting with a corset reads as eveningwear. Alex Perry Fall Winter 2026 puts sage into a strapless drape mini, a longline corset top, a double-breasted blazer and two trousers, which together make a formal evening suit.
What jewellery goes with a forest green gown?
Yellow gold is the best jewellery for a forest green gown, because it warms the green and makes it look richer. Diamonds and emeralds both work, and tone-on-tone green stones look deliberate. With a one-shoulder and scarf neckline, wear statement earrings and skip the necklace. Keep silver for cooler greens such as sage and teal.
What shoes go with a green evening gown?
Metallic gold sandals and black satin pumps are the safest shoes with a green evening gown. Avoid matching the exact green, which flattens the look. A deep burgundy shoe is a confident pairing with forest green, and a nude pointed heel suits sage tailoring because it keeps the leg long under a pleated trouser.
Does green suit every skin tone?
Some shade of green suits every skin tone. Forest green flatters almost everyone and is strongest on deep and olive skin. Fern and chartreuse suit warm undertones. Sage and teal suit cool and neutral undertones. If you are unsure, start with forest green, the green least likely to wash anyone out in evening light and in photographs.
Is green a good colour for a winter wedding guest?
Green is one of the best colours for a winter wedding guest. Forest green and fern look rich in low winter light and never compete with a bride in white. Choose a long gown for an evening ceremony, ideally with sleeves for a cold venue, such as the Alex Perry fern long-sleeve tiered drape gown in satin crepe.
