Is Alex Perry a Luxury Brand? Quality, Craft and What You Pay For

Yes, Alex Perry is a luxury brand. The Sydney house was founded in 1992 by Alex Perry, builds its eveningwear on internal corsetry in fabrics such as satin crepe, wool suiting and lamb leather, offers made-to-order bridal gowns by appointment, and sells through luxury retailers including Net-a-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. The red-carpet record backs it up, from Jennifer Lopez in 2018 to Joey King in October 2026.

That is the short answer. The longer one is about what actually happens inside the clothes, because the case for Alex Perry as a luxury label rests on construction more than on a logo. Below: where the house comes from, what you are paying for, who wears it, how it compares with its peers, and whether it is worth it.

Is Alex Perry a luxury brand? The evidence

Luxury is a word that gets stretched thin, so here is the test we apply at Luxury Shoes : heritage, craft, distribution and recognition. Alex Perry passes on all four.

  • Heritage. The label launched in 1992 from a studio in Kensington, Sydney, moved to Double Bay in 1994 and has been designing eveningwear for more than three decades.
  • Craft. Many pieces are built on an internal corset, so the bodice holds its shape on its own instead of relying on the body to fill it out. Alex Perry Bride makes gowns to order, by appointment.
  • Distribution. The ready-to-wear sits at Net-a-Porter, Mytheresa, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Harrods, Moda Operandi, FWRD and Ounass, all retailers with strict buying standards.
  • Recognition. A dated list of red-carpet appearances, set out in the table further down.

Where Alex Perry comes from

Alex Perry was born Alexandros Pertsinidis in Sydney on 14 February 1963. He opened his label in 1992 in Kensington, relocated to Double Bay two years later, and opened a boutique in Sydney’s Strand Arcade in 2002. That boutique closed in March 2020 when the business moved its focus to online and wholesale. Ready-to-wear launched globally in 2013 under the creative direction of Alex Perry and Trevor Stones, and it is the ready-to-wear that international luxury retailers now carry.

Many Australians also know him from television: he was a judge on all ten series of Australia’s Next Top Model. The full biography is in our profile, Who is Alex Perry?

What you pay for: construction, fabric and corsetry

Hold an Alex Perry gown up to the light, then turn it inside out. That second view explains the positioning better than any campaign.

Internal corsetry

The house signature is a bodice that does the work. On pieces such as the Strapless Sweetheart Drape Gown in Wool Suiting the longline corset runs below the natural waist, so a strapless neckline stays where it was cut through dinner and dancing. The brand’s own fit note says its clothes are constructed to sculpt and designed to sit high on the waist to elongate. That is a structural promise, and it is expensive to keep: boning, panelling and a lining that has to be cut as precisely as the shell.

Fabric

The Fall Winter 2026 collection is a good cross-section. There is 100% virgin wool suiting, lamb leather on the dresses and bodysuits, lamb shearling on the oversize biker, a silk-blend devoré, dry jersey in 100% viscose, leopard lace, stretch mesh and the satin crepe the house is best known for. Satin crepe is the hero: matte on one side, a soft sheen on the other, with enough weight to hang in a clean column. The Strapless Tucked Gown in Satin Crepe shows why it photographs so well under flash.

Construction and finish

Drape is harder to make than it looks. The Cupped Asymmetric Tiered Drape Gown in blackberry satin crepe has a cupped bodice and tiers that fall asymmetrically across the skirt, and each fold has to be set so it lands in the same place on every gown. The leather pieces are cut in panels and finished with concealed zips, as on the Scoop Singlet Bodysuit in black leather.

Made-to-order bridal

Alex Perry Bride offers made-to-order gowns by appointment, and the brand lists its Bride Spring Summer 2027 collection as launching in October 2026. Vogue Australia covered the bridal relaunch on 23 July 2026. Made to order is the clearest marker of a luxury house: the gown is produced for one client instead of pulled from a warehouse. Our guide to Alex Perry wedding dresses covers the collection.

Why is Alex Perry expensive?

Because the cost sits in places you cannot see from the hanger. A corset bodice needs more pattern pieces and more construction steps than a stretch dress. Lamb leather and shearling are bought by the skin, and a strapless leather dress needs large, clean skins with no marks across the bodice. Satin crepe and silk-blend devoré are premium cloths, and the drape on a tiered gown uses far more of them than the finished silhouette suggests. Add a Sydney design studio and a made-to-order bridal arm, and the price reflects the work. For current prices on any piece, check its product page.

Is Alex Perry worth it?

Yes, if you buy the pieces where the construction shows. Our picks for value over many wears:

It is less worth it if you want ease and stretch for a long day on your feet. Corset dressing is a commitment. If that sounds like you, read our Alex Perry size guide before ordering, because a corset bodice needs the right size to feel as good as it looks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alex Perry a luxury brand?

Yes. Alex Perry is a Sydney luxury eveningwear house founded in 1992. It is known for gowns built on internal corsetry in satin crepe, wool suiting and lamb leather, offers made-to-order bridal by appointment, and is stocked by luxury retailers including Net-a-Porter, Mytheresa, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Harrods. Its gowns have been worn by Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and Joey King.

Why is Alex Perry so expensive?

Alex Perry costs more because of how the clothes are built. Many pieces have an internal corset with boning and panelling, the fabrics include satin crepe, silk-blend devoré, lamb leather and shearling, and the draped gowns take far more cloth than their slim shape suggests. The bridal line is made to order by appointment.

Is Alex Perry worth it?

Alex Perry is worth it for structured eveningwear you will wear many times. A black satin-crepe gown, the leather cropped biker jacket and the wool-suiting blazer and trousers give the most wears for the spend. It is a weaker buy if you want soft, stretchy dressing, because corset bodices are fitted and non-stretch by design.

Is Alex Perry an Australian brand?

Yes. Alex Perry is an Australian brand based in Sydney. The designer, born Alexandros Pertsinidis in Sydney in 1963, launched the label in 1992 from a studio in Kensington and moved to Double Bay in 1994. Ready-to-wear launched globally in 2013, and the brand now sells online and through international luxury retailers.

Which celebrities have worn Alex Perry?

Verified wearers include Jennifer Lopez at the Robin Hood Foundation benefit in May 2018 and at a Kamala Harris rally on 31 October 2024, Rachel Zegler at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in November 2025, Heidi Klum at Cannes in May 2026 and Joey King at the InStyle Imagemakers Awards in October 2026.

Where are Alex Perry dresses made?

The brand does not state a single country of manufacture on its website, so check the care label inside the garment for the origin of a specific piece. What is consistent is the design base: every collection is created by the Alex Perry studio in Sydney, which has designed the label since 1992, and bridal gowns are made to order.
