Polène Review: Leather, Weight, Wear and Our Honest Verdict

0

Our honest Polène review: yes, it is a good brand, with certified European calf, hand-stitched folds made in Ubrique, Spain, and designs that look far more sculptural than most bags at its level. The trade-offs are real, though: some models are heavy (the Numéro Un weighs 925 g and the Mokki 860 g), several have few pockets, and the suede, nubuck and pale shades need more care than the grained leathers.

Polène is the Paris leather house founded in 2016 by Antoine Mothay with his siblings Mathieu and Elsa. This review covers leather, construction, weight, wear and care, then who each bag suits. For the bigger question of positioning, read our piece on whether Polène is a luxury brand.

Leather quality: certified European calf

Polène sources its leather from certified European tanneries, with Italian, Spanish and Dutch calf depending on the model. The textured full-grain Italian calf used on bags like the Numéro Un Nano in Textured Black Bag has a fine, even grain that feels dense in the hand, and it is the finish I would choose for daily use. The smooth calf on the Numéro Un in Camel Bag is softer to the touch and shows the colour more vividly, but it marks more easily.

The Dutch nappa calf used for the Neyu in Chalk Bag and the Osmo in Ebony Bag is the softest leather in the range, supple enough to fold against the body. Spanish calf appears on the Boky in Textured Ebony Bag and on the slouchy Shuldo in Black Bag, which is lined in Italian suede.

Construction and craft in Ubrique

The bags are made by leather artisans in Ubrique, in Andalusia, a town with a long leatherworking tradition. You can see their work in the folds: on the Numéro Un, the signature curves are held by hand stitching, and the edges are cleanly finished. The Numéro Dix in Black Bag has foam padding and hand-sewn stitches that give it a firm, saddle-like shape. Our guide to where Polène bags are made explains the exceptions, including the Nomad Solé, which is made in Madagascar.

Linings vary by model. The Numéro Un uses cotton twill, the Cyme and Tonca use a velvet microfibre, and the Nodde and Boky are lined in suede. Hardware is restrained: magnetic closures on many shapes, a gold-plated stainless steel buckle on the Tonca and an engraved clasp on the Mokki in Camel Bag.

Weight: the main thing to check

This is where Polène deserves the most scrutiny. The folded leather that makes the bags so striking also adds weight. The full Numéro Un weighs 925 g empty, the Mokki 860 g, the Cyme in Ebony Bag 900 g and the Shuldo 980 g. Fill any of these with a laptop and a water bottle and you will notice it on the shoulder by the end of the day.

The lighter options are excellent, though. The Numéro Dix weighs 386 g, the Tonca 366 g and the Neyu 350 g, and the Numéro Un Nano keeps the original shape at 440 g. If weight worries you, start there; our Polène bag sizes guide lists every measured model side by side.

How the textured leather wears

Grained calf is the forgiving choice. It hides light scratches, holds its shape and keeps a soft, matte look as it ages. The Cyme Mini in Taupe Bag is a good example: taupe in textured leather is about as low maintenance as Polène gets. Smooth leather develops a gentle sheen with handling and shows corners and edges sooner, which some people like.

Polène’s own advice is to avoid prolonged light and heat, water, grease, perfume and cosmetics, and to take care with dark and new clothes, because dye can bleed onto pale leather. I would add a practical note: the Numéro Neuf Mini in Taupe Bag and the other mid tones are the sweet spot, while chalk and ecru look lovely but need a careful owner.

Care and repairs

The brand’s care guidance is refreshingly simple. Polène leather needs little maintenance, and if a bag gets wet you should dab it gently with a soft cloth and let it air dry, with no cream required. Do not overfill it, and store it in its dust bag. Polène also offers a repair service at cost, which is a strong point for anyone buying a bag to keep for years.

Suede and nubuck need more attention. The Nodde Hobo in Cognac Bag has a suede interior pocket, and nubuck finishes are best kept away from rain. Keep these for drier days.

What could be better

Three things stand out. First, the weight of the larger sculptural models, already covered. Second, pockets: the Nodde in Black Bag is zipped and secure but simple inside, and the Cyme relies on one removable interior pocket, so you may want a pouch to keep small things in order. Third, the Numéro Sept in Taupe Bag weighs 730 g for a bag of 23 x 21 x 12 cm, which is a lot for its size.

On the positive side, the Béri in Black Bag and the Numéro Neuf East West in Black Bag show the range is not all heavy; the East West is 540 g for a roomy zipped shoulder bag. Some pieces also use upcycled material, such as the leather pebble-pearls made in France from offcuts on the Nomad Solé in Tan Bag.

Who Polène suits, and our verdict

Polène suits people who want a bag that looks designed rather than branded, with almost no visible logo. It is a strong first designer bag, and the textured Numéro Dix and Numéro Un Nano are the safest buys. Commuters who carry a lot should test weight first. Polène around the world

United States

American buyers often ask how the bags cope with a full workday. The lighter Numéro Dix and Neyu make the most sense for long days on foot. The brand lists boutiques on Broadway and in SoHo in New York, and has leased a space on Oak Street in Chicago.

United Kingdom

British weather is the real test. Textured calf stands up to drizzle far better than suede, and a zipped Nodde keeps rain out. The brand lists a London boutique.

France

In Paris, Polène is a familiar sight, and you can see the full range at the boutiques the brand lists on Rue de Richelieu and the Champs-Élysées.

Germany and Europe

The brand lists boutiques on Neuer Wall in Hamburg, on Via Manzoni in Milan and in Copenhagen, which makes it easy to feel the weight of a Cyme before choosing.

Japan

Tokyo shoppers lean to compact shapes, and the nano sizes suit crowded trains. The brand opened its first Asian store in Minami-Aoyama in 2023.

Australia and Canada

Strong Australian sun can fade leather, so store bags away from windows. In Canadian winters, keep suede and nubuck for dry days and choose grained calf for snow.
