David Koma History: A Dated Timeline From Tbilisi to Blumarine

David Koma has been a London Fashion Week name since 2009, which makes the house older than most of the labels it is compared with and younger than it feels. This is the dated record: the designer’s route from Tbilisi to Central Saint Martins, the year the label launched, the awards, the four years at Mugler, the Blumarine appointment and the collections of 2025 and 2026. Every entry is taken from the brand’s own About page, from Wikipedia’s cited articles, and from WWD’s reports and reviews, each read on the date at the foot of the page.

The three eras of the house

Read across the table and the label falls into three periods. The first, 2009 to 2013, is the bodycon decade: the cocktail dress that “propelled the designer onto the international stage”, in the house’s own words, cut in stretch fabrics and scattered with plexi and crystal. The second, 2013 to 2017, is the Mugler period, when the London collections took on the Paris house’s hard shoulders and its taste for the bodysuit and the suit. The third runs from 2018 to now: the Fashion Fund years, the expansion into denim, leather and tailoring, the Blumarine appointment, and a run of collections that treat embellishment as architecture rather than decoration. The pieces at Luxury Handbags are all from the third era, from Resort 2026 onward, and the pre-fall 2026 edit is the most recent of them.

The constant through all three is the silhouette. The Fitted Sequin Gown of pre-fall 2026 is recognisably the same idea as the 2009 graduate dress, a column that follows the body and stops before it becomes a costume. What has changed is the finish: hand embroidery in glass crystal, 3D lace flowers, ostrich feathers declared as a by-product of the food industry, and a lining under almost everything. That is why a Koma dress from 2026 costs what it does, and why the real-versus-fake page can tell you what to look for.

“Blumarine embodies a unique blend of sensuality, timeless glamour and elegance that I always admired, and it is an honor to be able to write the next chapter in the brand’s illustrious history,” David Koma said when WWD reported his appointment as creative director on 31 July 2024.
