The Macgraw Sequin Dress Edit: Every Piece In Stock

0

Macgraw does sequins differently to most occasion labels. The sequin is rarely the whole garment. It is embroidered onto tulle, worked into a floral, scattered across a crest, so the piece catches light in patches rather than shining flat. That makes these dresses easier to wear to a real event than the description suggests.

This is the edit of what is currently in stock, ordered by how loud each one is.

The full evening pieces

Neo Gothic Dress in Black Sequin

The heaviest thing on this list, and the best of them. Black sequin on nylon mesh with contrast white silk collar and cuffs, which is what stops it reading as a party dress. The collar is the whole idea: it turns a sequin gown into something closer to formal daywear worn at night. A$1,545.

Poetry Gown in white and black floral sequin

Full length, with the sequin worked as a floral rather than an all over ground. The white and black palette keeps it graphic. This is the wedding guest option if the wedding is black tie and you would rather not wear a colour. A$1,345.

Soiree Dress in floral sequin

The most decorative piece Macgraw currently has in sequin, and the one that needs the least styling. Bare shoulders, a plain bags/clutch-bags/" class="cvx-al cvx-al--category">clutch, done. A$1,545.

The shorter ones

Melancholy Dress in white and black floral sequin

A mini in nylon tulle with embroidered sequin, long sleeves with a slit detail at the hem, lined in nylon mesh. The sleeve is what makes it: it covers the arm completely while the skirt stays short, which is a more flattering balance than most sequin minis manage. A$1,045.

Porcelain Dress in Black Sequin

The Porcelain motif, rendered in black sequin on tulle instead of the usual blue on white. It ships with a black slip. If you already own something in the Porcelain print, this is the evening version of it. A$1,345.

Cavalleri Dress in navy sequin

Navy rather than black, which is the reason to buy it. Navy sequin photographs softer and reads less costume under warm light. A$945, and the most reasonable entry point on this list.

Separates, if a dress is not the answer

The Post Grad pieces put silver sequin into the macgraw crest, which is a genuinely odd and good idea. The Post Grad Skirt in tulle with silver sequin crest works with a plain black knit for a dinner where a full gown would be too much. The matching Post Grad Top completes it.

One that is not sequin but belongs here anyway

The Secret History Dress is silk faille with a silk taffeta contrast, and it is the piece people search for by name. No sequin at all. It earns its place on an evening list because the faille holds a shape that sequin never will, and it is the better choice for a cold weather event.

How to wear sequin without looking overdressed

  • Cover something. A long sleeve, a high neck, a full length hem. Macgraw builds this in, which is why the Melancholy and the Neo Gothic work in daylight.
  • Keep the shoe matte. Satin and patent both fight sequin. Suede and plain leather do not.
  • Skip the necklace. An earring is enough. The dress is already doing that job.
  • Dry clean only, always. Warm iron on the reverse if you must, and keep direct heat away from the embellishment.

Sizing and fit

Australian sizing matches UK sizing on this label. AU 6 equals UK 6, EU 34 and US 2, running to AU 14 equals UK 14, EU 42 and US 10. The sequin styles are cut true to size and most are fully lined, so there is no need to size up for comfort over the embroidery.
