Dolce & Gabbana Wedding Guest Dresses: What Works and What to Avoid

Dolce & Gabbana is a natural wedding guest label and a slightly risky one, for the same
reason: the house does not do quiet. Used well that is exactly what you want at a wedding.
Used carelessly it competes with the bride, which is the one outcome nobody wants.

Two rules cover most of it. Avoid white and anything near it. And let the dress be the whole
outfit rather than adding to it.

Which prints work

Rose on black

The safest strong choice. Reads as evening, reads as considered, and the black ground keeps
it well away from bridal territory. This is the one to reach for at an evening reception.

Rose on a pale ground

Lovely for a daytime wedding, and for a garden one, with a caution: check the ground colour carefully.
A very pale cream ground can read closer to white than it looks on screen. If in doubt, pick
the darker colourway.

Majolica

Blue and ochre on white. The white ground makes it a judgement call for a wedding, though
the print is dense enough that it rarely reads as a white dress. Better for a lunch than a
church.

What to avoid

Leopard, at almost any wedding. The house treats it as a neutral and in daily wear that is
true, but at a wedding it reads as a statement about you rather than about the day. Save it.

Which length

• Midi and calf-length. The right answer for most weddings, and the most
  versatile length in the collection. Works for a church, a garden and a restaurant.
• Maxi. For a black-tie wedding, and for an evening one. This is also where the heaviest
  embellishment sits.
• Mini. Fine for an evening reception, rarely right for a ceremony. The
  corsetry at this length is cut close, so check the bust measurement rather than the size.

The practical notes

Charmeuse and silk twill dominate the printed dresses and both fall closer to the body than
a woven cotton of the same size. Where the house publishes a length we carry it to the product
page, usually measured from the shoulder on a specific Italian size, and most pages tell you the
model is 175cm in an IT 40, which is a UK 8. If you are shorter, read calf-length as closer to
ankle-length on you.
