Black Tie Dresses: What the Dress Code Means and What to Wear
For women, black tie means a floor-length evening gown: that is the standard, and it is the safest reading of any invitation that says “black tie” without qualification. A dressy cocktail-length piece is acceptable only when the invitation says “black tie optional”, and even then a long gown is never the wrong call.
That is the short answer. The longer one is about cloth, cut and season, because two gowns of the same length can read very differently in a ballroom. Below: what each dress code asks of you, the fabrics that look right after dark, how to handle sleeves and colour, and 42 Huishan Zhang gowns from $1,740 to $9,430, followed by black tie gowns from six other houses Luxury Handbags carries.
Black tie, black tie optional and white tie
The three codes sit on one ladder. White tie is the most formal and the rarest: state banquets, some balls, a handful of opera galas. Black tie is the one most people actually receive, for charity dinners, formal weddings, award evenings and benefit galas. Black tie optional tells you the hosts will be in dinner jackets but guests have some room.
| Dress code | What women wear | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| White tie | A full evening gown, usually with a fuller skirt | Floor-length only | Long gloves and formal jewellery are traditional; shoulders often covered for the formal part of the evening |
| Black tie | An evening gown | Floor-length is the standard | Fabric and finish matter more than volume; a sleek column is as correct as a ball skirt |
| Black tie optional | An evening gown, a dressy cocktail dress, a formal evening separate | Floor-length, midi, knee-length | Choose cocktail length only in a fabric that looks expensive: duchesse, crepe, embellished jersey |
| Creative black tie | Evening dress with a point of view | Usually long | Colour, feathers and print all welcome, but keep the formality |
When an invitation is vague, dress up. Nobody has ever been embarrassed by arriving at a formal dinner in a floor-length gown.
Huishan Zhang gowns for black tie
Huishan Zhang trained at Central Saint Martins, where he took an MA in Pattern Cutting, and worked at Dior, including time in the haute couture atelier, before launching his label in London. The V&A acquired his couture dragon dress in 2012. That training shows in the gowns: Luxury Handbags currently carries 42 of them, priced from $1,740 to $9,430, and most are cut for exactly this kind of evening. The two Resort 2027 additions below are pre-order pieces, made to order by the house, so they ship later than stocked items.
New for Resort 2027
The Delphi comes in pink nylon organza worked all over with dimensional embroidered flowers, with sheer long sleeves and a softly structured bodice. The belt in the campaign images is styling only. The Mia is a floor-length column of black viscose crepe jersey with a sheer yoke and an embroidered flower at the neck, finished with ostrich feathers. Between them they cover the two ways to answer black tie: volume and colour, and a clean dark line.

Fabrics that read as black tie
Length gets you through the door. Fabric decides whether the gown looks right once you are inside. Black tie cloth has weight, depth of colour and a finish that holds up under low, warm light. Thin, shiny satin and anything that creases on the drive over will work against you.
| Fabric | How it reads | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Duchesse | Heavy, lustrous, holds a sculpted shape | Greta Gown in Pink Quartz Duchesse, $2,710 |
| Sable | Smooth and matte; at Huishan Zhang a fabric name for an acetate and polyester weave, never fur | Delphi Gown in Black Sable, $4,760 |
| Organza | Crisp and sheer, gives volume without weight | Delphi Gown in Pink Flower Embroidered Organza, $5,320 |
| Crepe | Dense, fluid, the cleanest column | Reign Gown in Black Crepe, $5,320 |
| Tulle | Layered and soft, the ballroom fabric | Augusta Gown in Black Tulle, $6,260 |
| Jersey with embellishment | Comfortable for a long night; the decoration lifts it to formal | Mia Gown in Black Crepe Jersey, $2,520 |
Plain jersey on its own sits closer to cocktail. Add feathers, embroidery, crystal and the same cloth earns its place at a seated dinner. For a deeper look at how the house works each cloth, see the Huishan Zhang fabric guide.

Sleeves and modesty
Black tie has no rule about sleeves. Strapless, one-shoulder and halter gowns are all correct. What changes the decision is the venue and the guest list: a religious ceremony before the dinner, a family with conservative expectations, a cold country house. In those cases a covered arm is the considered choice.
Gowns with sleeves built into the pattern look more deliberate than a strapless gown with a borrowed wrap. The Delphi Gown in Pink Flower Embroidered Organza has sheer long sleeves, which cover the arm while keeping the line light. Carolina Herrera’s Short-Sleeve Sequin Gown in Black, $16,890, and Rolled Sleeves Button-Front Gown in Black, $8,110, both bring a sleeve to a formal black gown. Our edit of long-sleeve occasion dresses goes further.
Colour
Black is the default because it never looks underdressed and it hides a long evening. It is not the only answer. Deep jewel tones, navy, emerald and burgundy carry the same weight. Pale colours work well at summer events and weddings, with one exception: never white, ivory and cream at a wedding unless the couple asks for it.
Colour also helps in a room full of black. A blush tulle gown like the Bligny, $7,000, will photograph better than another black column, and still reads as fully formal because the fabric and the length do the work.
Winter and summer black tie
In winter, go heavier. Duchesse, sable, crepe and velvet hold their shape and keep you warm between the car and the door. Long sleeves make more sense, darker colours suit the light, and you need a proper coat over the gown, not a pashmina. Browse designer coats with enough length to cover a floor-length skirt.
In summer, go lighter. Organza, chiffon, voile and tulle move in warm air and look right outdoors at a marquee dinner. Huishan Zhang’s Elinda Gown in Mint Chiffon, $4,950, and Etta Gown in Coral Chiffon, $4,760, are good examples. Paler colours are welcome. The length stays the same.
Accessories, briefly
- Bag: a small clutch, hard-shell, beaded, satin. A day bag spoils a gown.
- Shoes: a heel you can stand in for three hours. Closed toes in winter, sandals in summer.
- Jewellery: one point of focus. Statement earrings with a high neck, a necklace with a strapless line.
- Cover-up: a tailored coat in winter, a wrap in summer. Check it at the door.
- Gloves: only for white tie, unless the gown was designed with them.
Frequently asked questions
What does black tie mean for a woman?
Black tie means a floor-length evening gown for women. Fabric and finish matter as much as length, so look for crepe, duchesse, sable, organza and tulle. A cocktail-length dress is only right when the invitation says black tie optional.
Can you wear a short dress to a black tie event?
Not to a strict black tie event. If the invitation says black tie optional, a dressy cocktail dress in a formal fabric is acceptable. When in doubt, wear a long gown, because it is never the wrong answer.
What is the difference between black tie and white tie for women?
White tie is more formal than black tie. Both require a floor-length gown, but white tie traditionally adds long gloves and a fuller, more formal gown, with shoulders often covered for the formal part of the evening. Black tie allows a sleek column and a wider range of necklines.
Is a black gown always right for black tie?
A black floor-length gown in a good fabric is the safest choice for any black tie event. The one caution is a wedding where the couple has asked guests to avoid black. Jewel tones and deep navy carry the same formality.
How much should a black tie gown cost?
At Luxury Shoes , black evening gowns start at $830 and the Huishan Zhang gowns run from $1,740 to $9,430. Price follows cloth and hand work: an embellished tulle gown costs more than a plain crepe column. A well-cut crepe gown at $1,300 to $2,500 is a sound investment if you attend one black tie event a year.
Are Huishan Zhang gowns true to size?
The house states that its sizing is true to size and cuts from UK 6 to UK 18. Models in the brand’s images are 178 cm and wear a UK 8. Our Huishan Zhang sizing guide has the full conversions.
