Note the Ruthie Shirtdress. At an AU 8 it measures 107 cm at the bust against 84 cm on the Kenny Midi Dress in the same size. Both are labelled 8. That 23 cm gap is the difference between oversized and regular, and it is why the brand’s fit line matters more than the number.

The Alémais fit model

The Alémais fit model is around 175 to 177 cm tall, which is 5 foot 9, and wears a size AU 6 (UK 6, US 2). Alémais prints this on every product page. The Kenny Midi Dress runs 126 to 139 cm long across the sizes, and that length is cut for that height, so if you are under 160 cm a midi will land nearer the ankle.

Between sizes? Here is the decision

• Linen and cotton dresses with a fitted bodice. Take the larger size. Linen has no stretch, and the brand’s own sizing notes say a firm bodice feels tight sooner than a jersey one.
• Oversized tops/shirt/" class="cvx-al cvx-al--category">shirts, shirtdresses and blazers. Take the smaller size if you want a regular line. Take your usual size if you want the silhouette as photographed.
