Who Is Tony Ward? The Beirut Couture House Explained

Tony Ward is a Lebanese couturier whose house has been dressing red carpets, galas and weddings out of Beirut since 1997. He is known as the Architect of Detail, and the nickname is literal: he draws his shapes from contemporary buildings, then hands them to an atelier that has been sewing since 1952.

The short answer

Tony Ward was born in Beirut on 27 March 1970, the son of the couturier Elie Ward. He trained in Paris, worked under three of the most demanding designers of the era, came home, and launched Tony Ward Couture in 1997. A second-generation atelier

The Ward workroom opened in Beirut in 1952 under Elie Ward. That matters more than a founding date usually does, because it means Tony Ward grew up inside the business rather than arriving at it. By the time he took over the name he had watched three decades of fittings.

At eighteen he left for the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the school the French couture federation runs for its own trade. From there he went into the ateliers: Claude Montana at Lanvin, Gianfranco Ferré at Dior, Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé. He launched his own couture line in Beirut in 1997 and took first prize at the Société des Artistes et Décorateurs competition that year.

Rome first, then Paris

Tony Ward showed in Rome for a decade, beginning with Alta Roma in 2004, and picked up the L’Ago d’Oro award in 2005. In 2014 he moved the collection to Paris Fashion Week, where it still shows.

In between there was a genuinely strange one. In 2013 he presented a collection called Frozen Memories in Moscow at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and the runway was walked by contestants from that year’s Miss Universe pageant.

Who has worn it

Two pieces are documented well enough to be worth citing. Whitney Houston wore a Tony Ward gown to the BET Honors in 2010, and that gown was later shown in a temporary exhibit at the Grammy Museum. What the house actually makes

Three things recur season after season.
