Where Is Jenny Packham Made?

Jenny Packham is designed in London and manufactured overseas. That is the short answer, and it is worth being precise about, because the two halves of it get conflated often.

The design house is British

Jenny Packham founded the label in London in 1988, presenting her first collection at the London Designer Show that year. She trained at Southampton College of Art and then at Saint Martin’s School of Art. The studio has been London-based since, and in 2013 the V&A showed a retrospective of the label’s first twenty-five years in its Raphael Gallery.

So the design, the pattern cutting and the house’s identity are British. When you read that Jenny Packham is a British house, that is what is meant.

Where the garments are produced

Production sits with specialist manufacturers abroad. Across the current collection at Luxury Handbags the brand publishes a country of origin on some pieces and not others. Where it is stated, it names India and China.

That is not unusual, and it is not a quality signal on its own. Hand-applied beadwork of the density Jenny Packham uses is done by hand almost everywhere it is done at all, and the ateliers in India in particular hold the deepest concentration of that skill in the world. A heavily beaded gown can carry weeks of hand embroidery. Very little of that work happens in Europe at any price.

What the garments are made from

The current collection runs to acetate and viscose blends, structured polyester with a little stretch, and fine nylon grounds for the sequinned pieces. The brand publishes the fibre content for most styles and, on some heavily embellished pieces, publishes none. Again, where it is not stated we do not fill the gap.

Every piece is fully lined and dry clean only.

Does it matter for the buyer?

For a beaded eveningwear gown, the questions that decide quality are how the beading is applied, whether the piece is fully lined, and how the bodice is constructed. Jenny Packham applies beading by hand, lines everything, and builds internal structure into the bodice with shoulder pads and, on some styles, a boned corset. Those are the things you can see and feel.
