Occasion Dresses: What to Wear to 7 Events in 2026

Occasion dresses are the dresses you buy for a specific event: weddings, the races, christenings, garden parties, galas and formal dinners. Most are midi to tea length for daytime and floor-length for evening, in structured fabrics such as cloque, satin, crepe and taffeta. At Luxury Shoes , occasion dresses come from Roksanda, Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, Jenny Packham and Safiyaa.

“Occasion dress” is a particularly British phrase. It covers the gap between everyday clothes and full black tie: the dress you wear to a summer wedding, a day at the races and a christening, and the longer dress you wear to a gala and an evening reception. In the US, the same category is usually split into wedding guest dresses, cocktail dresses and formal dresses. This guide works through each occasion in turn, with what to wear, what to avoid and the pieces to look at now.

What is an occasion dress?

An occasion dress is a dress designed for a dressed-up event, smart enough for a ceremony and comfortable enough for a long day.

What separates an occasion dress from a day dress is construction. Occasion dresses are usually lined, cut from fabrics that hold their shape, and designed to photograph well. They tend to have sleeves and modest necklines for daytime, because many occasions involve a church, a ceremony and older relatives. The best ones look as good at the end of a long day as they did at the start.

What should you wear to each occasion?

Each occasion has its own unwritten rules, so start with the event and work back to the dress.

Occasion Best length Coverage Good fabrics Avoid
Daytime wedding Midi to tea length Shoulders covered for church Cloque, satin, taffeta, printed cotton White, ivory, anything sheer
Evening wedding Floor-length to midi Depends on the venue Silk satin, double satin, crepe White, ivory
The races Knee to midi Straps, midriff covered Structured cloque, crepe, taffeta Strapless, very short hems
Christening Knee to midi Shoulders and arms covered Crepe, suiting, cotton Low necklines, evening shine
Garden party Midi to tea length Light sleeves, wide straps Printed cotton, cloque, organza Stiletto heels on grass
Gala Floor-length Any, within the dress code Silk satin, taffeta, duchess satin Day fabrics, short hems
Formal dinner Midi to floor-length Sleeves suit a long seated evening Crepe, satin, velvet Anything that creases badly

What occasion dress should you wear to a wedding?

Wear a colourful midi with covered shoulders for a daytime wedding, and a longer dress for an evening reception.

Colour is the easiest way to look like a wedding guest. The Roksanda Rova Dress in Heliotrope is cut in vivid fuchsia cloque, with a cap sleeve running into a notched neckline and a dramatically full skirt below. It is made for weddings and formal events. The Roksanda Sana Dress in Brush Burgundy suits a warmer, more relaxed wedding: printed cotton with a soft V-neckline, flutter sleeves and a circular pleated skirt that flares from the waist.

From other houses, the Emilia Wickstead Leila Dress in Hot Pink and Orange Stripe Taffeta Faille brings a bold stripe to a structured dress, and the Jenny Packham Debut Dress in Tourmaline Pink is a midi from a London house that has designed eveningwear since 1988.

What should you wear to the races?

Wear a structured dress with straps, a covered midriff and a hem at the knee and longer, and add a hat.

Race days have the most written rules of any occasion. Royal Ascot is the strictest. In the Royal Enclosure, dresses and skirts should fall just above the knee and longer, straps should be at least one inch wide, midriffs must be covered, and strapless, off-the-shoulder, halter neck and spaghetti strap styles are not allowed. Hats are preferred; a headpiece needs a solid base of 4 inches (10cm) and more, and small fascinators are not accepted. The Queen Anne Enclosure is more relaxed on headwear and length but still asks for straps, a covered midriff and no sheer fabrics. These rules follow the 2026 dress code as reported by Horse and Hound, so always check the current official Royal Ascot style guide before you go. Our Royal Ascot dress code guide has the full detail.

Royal Ascot also gave Roksanda one of its best-known moments. On day two of Royal Ascot, 17 June 2026, the Princess of Wales wore a custom version of the marigold Roksanda Brigitte dress with a yellow Jane Taylor hat. The Brigitte is not stocked at Luxury Shoes , but the same idea of a fitted waist and a full skirt runs through the house. The Roksanda Kova Dress in Aquamarine pairs a V-neckline and cap sleeves with a fitted bodice and a full, pleated tea-length skirt in cloque, and it is made with day parties and warm-weather occasions in mind. What should you wear to a christening?

Wear a modest knee to midi dress with sleeves, in a soft colour and a matte fabric.

A christening is usually held in a church in the daytime, so the dress should cover the shoulders and avoid evening shine. Tailored dresses work particularly well. The Emilia Wickstead Olivienne Dress in Chocolate Birdseye Suiting is a midi in a wool-blend suiting that looks smart without looking like evening wear. The Roksanda Oryn Dress in Calliope Pink is softer: a crepe dress with a fitted Bordeaux bodice and an asymmetric draped neckline that flares into a sweeping circular midi skirt.

If you want full sleeves, our guide to long-sleeve occasion dresses covers the best styles.

What should you wear to a garden party?

Wear a printed tea-length dress in a light fabric, with wide straps and sleeves, and a flat-soled shoe.

Garden parties are daytime events on grass, so think about comfort and colour. The Roksanda Zelia Dress in Brush Stripe Verdant is cut for exactly this: a printed twill dress with a square neckline, wide straps, a fitted bodice and a full skirt to tea length. The Roksanda Wren Dress in Aqua is another good choice, with a round neckline, flutter sleeves and a red scarf that falls to an asymmetric handkerchief hem. The Erdem Floral Organza Cloque Asymmetric Midi Dress, in 100% silk, brings a floral print to the same occasion.

What should you wear to a gala?

Wear a floor-length dress in a rich fabric, and use colour and shape to stand out.

Galas usually follow black tie, so the dress should be long. This is the place for volume, capes and strong colour. The Roksanda Zoa Dress in Meadow Green, in double satin, drapes across the body, cinches at the waist with a knot and cascades into an asymmetric skirt; it is built for formal events and wedding guest dressing. For more ideas, read our guide to gala dresses and our full formal dresses guide.

What should you wear to a formal dinner?

Wear a midi to floor-length dress with sleeves, in a fabric that will not crease while you sit.

A formal dinner means hours at a table, so comfort and fabric matter. The Safiyaa Rika Midi Dress in Wine is a deep, rich colour for an autumn dinner, and the ME+EM Fit + Flare Maxi Dress in Merlot gives a longer line in a similar shade. For a softer, more romantic look, the Huishan Zhang Pia Dress in Pink Quartz Tulle uses layers of tulle. For more on evening options, read our guide to evening dresses.

How do you choose an occasion dress that you will wear again?

Choose a strong colour, a classic shape and a fabric that works across seasons, then change the accessories for each event.

  • Pick a shape that crosses occasions. A fitted midi with sleeves works for a wedding, a christening and a dinner.
  • Choose colour over pattern. A single strong colour is less memorable in photographs than a bold print, so it can be worn again more easily.
  • Look for structure. Cloque, double satin and crepe hold their shape through a long day and pack well.
  • Change the layers. A tailored jacket turns a summer occasion dress into an autumn one.
  • Check the sizing. Roksanda cuts UK sizes 4 to 22 and says it fits true to size; our Roksanda size guide has the full chart, with UK and US conversions.

Frequently asked questions

What is an occasion dress?

An occasion dress is a dress designed for a dressed-up event such as a wedding, the races, a christening, a garden party and a gala. It is usually lined and cut from a structured fabric such as cloque, satin, crepe and taffeta, and sits between everyday clothes and full black tie.

What length should an occasion dress be?

Midi to tea length suits most daytime occasions, including weddings, christenings and garden parties. Knee to midi works for the races, as long as it meets the enclosure rules. Choose floor-length for galas and black tie evening events.

What colours are best for occasion dresses?

Strong colours such as fuchsia, aqua, green and burgundy photograph well and suit most daytime occasions. Softer colours suit christenings. Avoid white and ivory at a wedding.

Can you wear the same occasion dress to more than one event?

Yes. Choose a single strong colour and a classic shape such as a fitted midi with sleeves, then change the jacket, shoes and hat for each event. Structured fabrics such as cloque and crepe also pack and wear well.

What should you wear to Royal Ascot?

In the Royal Enclosure, wear a dress just above the knee and longer, with straps at least one inch wide and a covered midriff, plus a hat. Strapless and off-the-shoulder styles are not allowed. Always check the current official Royal Ascot style guide before you go.
