Christopher Esber Size Guide: AU, UK, US and EU Conversions

The single most useful thing to know before buying Christopher Esber: the label is cut on Australian sizing, and on the brand’s own conversion table Australian sizes map straight onto UK sizes with no offset. An AU 8 is a UK 8. An AU 12 is a UK 12. If you already know your UK size, you know your Esber size.

That trips people up because plenty of size charts online assume an Australian label needs converting down to UK. It does not. Below is the brand’s published table, plus the body measurements behind it.

Body measurements

These are the body measurements the brand publishes for each size. They describe the body the garment is cut for, not the finished garment, so use them to place yourself on the ladder rather than to predict how much ease a specific piece has.

Note the jump between a 6 and an 8. The waist opens up six centimetres there against two and a half between a 4 and a 6, so the ladder is not evenly spaced at the bottom. If you sit between those two, the measurement matters more than the number you usually take.

Does Christopher Esber run true to size?

Yes. The house publishes no blanket sizing correction, which in our experience is the honest signal: labels that run small usually say so. Take your normal UK size and it will be right on most of the range.

Two exceptions worth knowing.

• Ruched jersey and body-contouring knits. These stretch with wear and settle closer than a woven of the same size. If you are between sizes on a jersey piece, the smaller one usually holds better after a few wears. The Aiba Draped Shirt Dress is a good example of the fabric behaviour.
• Swim. One style in the current range, the Pierced Orbit One Piece, carries the brand’s own instruction to size up. Where a piece has a sizing note the product page states it, and where there is none the piece is cut true.

Tailoring runs true and needs no adjustment. The Bennett Silk Pant and the Relaxed Denim Quartz Jean both behave as the number suggests.

Choosing between two sizes

Measure your waist first. Esber places a lot of construction at the waist and hip, gathered panels, orbit hardware, cut-outs, so that is where a size decision is usually made. Bust is the more forgiving measurement on the draped pieces because the drape absorbs it.

For a fitted jersey piece, take the size your waist lands on. For tailoring and outerwear like the Dannie Jersey Jacket, take the size your bust lands on so the shoulder sits correctly, since a shoulder is the one thing an alteration cannot fix cheaply.
