Viktor & Rolf Couture vs Ready-to-Wear vs Mariage: What You Can Actually Buy
Viktor & Rolf Couture vs Ready-to-Wear vs Mariage: What You Can Actually Buy
Viktor & Rolf runs three clothing lines that are easy to confuse: haute couture, ready-to-wear and Mariage bridal. They are made differently, sold differently and priced differently, and the same house name and the same signatures appear on all three. If you have seen a Viktor & Rolf gown on a runway, in a museum and on Luxury Shoes , this page explains which of the three you were looking at, what each one costs, how to get it, and why the ready-to-wear is the only one you can buy off the rail. It draws on the house’s own pages, the Fédération’s couture rules and Luxury Shoes ’s product data.

- Mariage: the bridal line, sold through appointed bridal retailers by appointment and at trunk shows; not sold online.

- Made-to-order ready-to-wear: a small group of pieces on the house web store that are cut to order in a standard size, distinct from couture.
Haute couture: the laboratory
Haute couture is a legally protected term in France. To use it, a house must be admitted to the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode’s couture calendar, show a collection in Paris each January and July, and make each piece to measure in its own atelier. Viktor & Rolf first showed couture for Spring/Summer 1998 in a Paris art gallery, joined the calendar, left it in the 2000s to build a ready-to-wear business, and returned for Autumn/Winter 2013 with the Zen Garden collection. It has shown couture every season since. This is the line that produces the pieces you have seen in the press: the tulle slogan gowns of Spring 2019, the sideways and upside-down ball gowns of the Late Stage Capitalism Waltz in Spring 2023, the wearable paintings of Autumn/Winter 2015.
Couture is where the house experiments, and Horsting and Snoeren describe it as “a laboratory for ideas”. It is available through the house’s bespoke service by private appointment, priced on request. It is not sold on the house web store and it is not sold at Luxury Shoes . The house also lists a small number of made-to-order pieces (style codes beginning VRM) on its web store; these are cut to order in standard sizes and are a ready-to-wear service, not couture.
Ready-to-wear: the wardrobe
Ready-to-wear is clothing made in standard sizes ahead of sale. Viktor & Rolf ran a ready-to-wear line from Autumn/Winter 2000 (Stars & Stripes) to 2015, paused it for ten years to concentrate on couture and fragrance, and relaunched it for Fall/Winter 2025. The relaunch took ideas from the couture shows, the volants, the bows, the tulle ruffles, the multi-layering, the balloon shapes, and cut them into a wardrobe of tops/shirt/" class="cvx-al cvx-al--category">shirts, tanks, jeans, trousers, skirts, jackets, coats and dresses in letter sizes.
The 191 pieces at Luxury Handbags are all ready-to-wear: 103 from Spring/Summer 2026, 67 from Fall/Winter 2025 and 21 from Fall/Winter 2026, made in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Scotland, priced $690 to $3,600. The couture influence is visible in the construction: the Corset Volant Gown in Black ($3,260) has a boned corset and a silk volant skirt; the All-Over Volants Organza Mini Dress in Black ($3,600) is covered in hand-finished organza volants; the Tulle Ruffle Circle Maxi Dress in Black ($3,110) is the couture tulle ruffle brought to a size S. But every one of them exists in seven sizes and ships from stock. See the gowns guide for the pieces closest to couture.
Mariage: the bridal line
Viktor&Rolf Mariage is the house’s bridal collection, described by the house as an exploration of its signature elements through classic couture influences. It is shown in lookbooks by season, sold exclusively through appointed bridal retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Kleinfeld and Mark Ingram in New York, Neiman Marcus in Dallas and Metal Flaque in Paris, and presented at trunk shows with those retailers. It is not sold online, and it is not sold at Luxury Shoes . The wedding dresses guide explains the difference and lists the ready-to-wear gowns in ivory that stand in for it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Viktor & Rolf couture?
The house is a haute couture house on the official Paris calendar and has shown couture every season since Autumn/Winter 2013. It also makes ready-to-wear, which is what Luxury Handbags sells, and a bridal line. Couture itself is made to measure by appointment and is not sold online.
What is the difference between Viktor & Rolf couture and ready-to-wear?
Couture is made to measure in the atelier and shown in Paris twice a year; ready-to-wear is produced in letter sizes XXS to XXL in European workshops and sold from stock. The ready-to-wear takes the couture signatures (volants, bows, tulle, multi-layering) and cuts them into a wearable wardrobe.
Can I buy Viktor & Rolf haute couture?
Through the house’s bespoke service by private appointment, priced on request. It is not sold on the house web store and Luxury Handbags does not sell it.
Does Luxury Handbags sell Viktor & Rolf couture?
No. Luxury Handbags sells the ready-to-wear line only: 191 pieces from the last three seasons, $690 to $3,600, all in stock and shipped worldwide.
What does made-to-order mean on the Viktor & Rolf website?
A small group of ready-to-wear pieces that the house cuts to order in a standard size after purchase, with a longer delivery time. It is a production method, not couture, which is made to the client’s measurements.
When did Viktor & Rolf return to ready-to-wear?
For Fall/Winter 2025, announced in March 2025, after a ten-year pause that began in 2015. The Spring/Summer 2026 and Fall/Winter 2026 collections followed, and all three seasons are at Luxury Shoes .
