Haute couture: the laboratory

Haute couture is a legally protected term in France. To use it, a house must be admitted to the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode’s couture calendar, show a collection in Paris each January and July, and make each piece to measure in its own atelier. Viktor & Rolf first showed couture for Spring/Summer 1998 in a Paris art gallery, joined the calendar, left it in the 2000s to build a ready-to-wear business, and returned for Autumn/Winter 2013 with the Zen Garden collection. Viktor&Rolf Mariage is the house’s bridal collection, described by the house as an exploration of its signature elements through classic couture influences. It is shown in lookbooks by season, sold exclusively through appointed bridal retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Kleinfeld and Mark Ingram in New York, Neiman Marcus in Dallas and Metal Flaque in Paris, and presented at trunk shows with those retailers.
