Why is The Row so expensive?

The Row selects cloth before it designs, using double-faced cashmere, sea island cotton and heavyweight silks that cost several times the industry norm. Production runs are small and most ready-to-wear is made in Italy rather than at volume. Nothing on the garment carries a logo, so the price rests entirely on fabric and construction.

Does The Row run big?

Yes, generally. The house favours voluminous, architectural silhouettes, and it cuts long and full by design. Many clients size down in knitwear and outerwear for a closer fit, while trousers are meant to sit low and loose.

Where is The Row made?

Most of The Row's ready-to-wear is made in Italy with specialist mills and ateliers. Selected knitwear and jersey are made in Japan and the United States.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen founded The Row in 2006 and remain the majority owners. In 2024 the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel, and Francoise Bettencourt Meyers took minority stakes in a deal that valued the label at around one billion dollars.

What is double-faced cashmere?

A construction in which two woven faces are joined by hand, so the garment needs no lining and has no wrong side. It uses three to four times the yarn of a single-faced knit and cannot be made quickly, which is why it holds a shoulder line that lighter knits cannot.
