In the late 1960s, the sewing machines used by Bottega Veneta artisans in Vicenza were designed for cloth, not the thick leathers typically used in luxury handbags. To solve this, the founders began weaving thin strips of highly supple, delicate leather together to create a material that was incredibly strong but as soft as fabric. This technique, known as Intrecciato, became the visual calling card of the brand. Today, it remains an incredibly labor-intensive process, taking master artisans hours (and sometimes days) to weave a single piece entirely by hand.
